Meet Bodelle, Ormiston Hospital’s Theatre Co-ordinator. Bodelle started with Ormiston when it opened and is a proud foundation team member. 1. How long have you been a nurse? And how long have you been working at Ormiston?

I have been a  qualified RN since Nov 2000, specialising in OR Nursing. I am a foundation staff member of Ormiston hospital starting in April 2009 – Joining the team, and participating in the set up and fit out of the operating rooms, it amazes me how far we have come in the 11 years since opening and I am proud to know there are still a number of Foundation staff still here with me.  I have taken a couple of smaller breaks in that time to raise my family, but Ormiston is home for me.

2.  What led you or inspired you into becoming a nurse?

I have always wanted to be a nurse since I was a little girl – My mother before me was also a Nurse and specialised in surgical ward nursing.  I was exposed at a very young age to the hospital setting, and always felt I wanted to take care of people in some way shape or form. I have had experienced various differing nursing roles in my career such as Theatre Coordinator, Theatre Nurse, Nurse Educator, Charge Nurse of Orthopaedics in both adult and Paediatrics nursing where I enjoyed some time at Starship Childrens hospital.  I have had nursing experience in both the public and Private sectors and have valued the learning and experiences from both areas.  I was fortunate enough to place in the Operating rooms at MMH for my pre registration paper and that’s where my love for all things surgery was born.

 3.   What is a patient success story that stands out for you?

I have many fond memories and patient success stories. A particular one that stands out the most would be when we have been able to perform specialist surgery for our international patients, that are able to receive specialist facial reconstructive surgery that is not available to them in their own country.  Theatre nursing (orthopaedics for me in particular) is rewarding in a way whereby, we are able to dramatically improve someone’s quality of life almost immediately and then the recovery part is over to them. It’s also amazing to me to be able to assist the specialists and see the instant “fix” we do when replacing someone Hip or Knee joint.

4. What do you enjoy about working for Ormiston Hospital?

I love working at Ormiston because of the values we have. We are a smaller group of people who all work hard to achieve great things.  We are making a difference everyday to the people in this area and providing superior service to the surgeons that work here.

5. Where would you like to take your nursing career? Is there further study or career ambitions that you might have?

I am currently in a senior role at Ormiston as the Theatre coordinator, this has me inspired to persue some further learning in the management of people and leadership area. Also I have an interest in the growth of my department and how we can develop further, to introduce teaching and education for Nursing students and New Graduates, that way we can start giving back, and growing our Own.

6. What is the most interesting about your job?

Every day is different for me, I am faced with new situations all the time, there is never a dull moment and I am continuously challenged to think on my feet and juggle at the same time, but I wouldn’t change anything. I am a people person and my job is about the people – Work collegues and also patients.

6. What would you ask Santa for Christmas?

I would love a cure for Covid 19 so that we could open up the boarders and be free to travel and experience the world again (or just a dry warm summer so that we can Camp and have fun in the sun)
