Caring with empathy | Kerry Quarterman | Kerry has driven our hospital Shoebox Christmas initiative for years – with 2024 being a record donation year. Kerry liaises directly with Koha Tree to ensure kids in need get something special on Christmas Day. She does a great job to encourage our team to get involved and goes above and beyond to not only collect all of the gifts but pack and deliver them to Koha Tree for distribution. |
Natalie Jamieson | As an experienced Registered Nurse, Natalie exemplifies the value of caring with empathy. She respects and integrates patients’ cultural backgrounds and beliefs into their care, showcasing her profound understanding of diverse perspectives and cultural competence. Natalie’s actions recently demonstrated cultural awareness, sensitivity and cultural competency by alerting the MDT in theatre that a 78-year-old gentleman scheduled to their theatre for Laparoscopic hernia repair was from a Muslim ethnic background. The most common approach surgeons use in hernia repair is using a surgical mesh; the mesh selected for this patient was made from biological porcine tissue. Having a diverse cultural understanding and knowledge, Natalie alerted the surgeon that the use of the surgical mesh selected by the surgeon would compromise the cultural beliefs of the patient, as the use of any products made from porcine tissue is not permissible for the followers of Muslim or Islam religion. Natalie’s advocacy in meeting the patient’s spiritual needs demonstrated professional accountability, cultural competency, and awareness in delivering culturally appropriate and safe patient care.
Courage to change | Michael Meehan | Michael has taken on the challenge of becoming an enrolled nurse later on in his career. He has shown initiative and a willingness to get stuck in and has a hunger to learn. Michael proves that age is just a number, especially if you have his determination. He brings a calm, caring, empathetic and professional approach not only to patients but colleagues as well. Michael has not only retrained, he’s thrown himself into various environments – from theatre to now laparoscopic cases. |
Jenny Huang | Jenny has recently taken up the massive task of being an IPC support. She is enthusiastic, has great initiative and is a huge support for IPC practices both on the floor and behind the scenes. She has been instrumental for the last two IPC weeks in organising activities and collating/collecting information and being proactive in getting staff to attend the sessions. She has been a huge support when Nachelle has been giving sit down education sessions. She has also become the audit master after initially being apprehensive. So appreciative of all her help and support and for becoming the IPC superstar she is.
Excellence in what we do | Amanda Hardy | Amanda’s leadership allows her to function effectively as a CRN and provide excellent care to patients scheduled in her theatre for surgery. She is rated as being highly skilled and knowledgeable and this transcends into a safe clinical environment. Amanda ensures new nurses are supported, coached and mentored. She has recently taken on the new challenge of learning robotic surgery! |
Nicki Dolden | Nicki is an amazing asset to Ormiston Hospital, she has a true passion for the patients and takes the time to triple check to ensure that everything is in place properly. She was already using the Standing up for Safety before we had the course as she always wants to ensure things are accurate and nothing is missing. Her medical knowledge goes beyond what is required for her role and she spends time investigating if she isn’t sure on something. |
