At Ormiston Hospital, we believe strong connections between primary and secondary care are essential to delivering the best possible outcomes for patients. One of the ways we support this connection is through our Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme, providing local GPs with opportunities to hear directly from specialists, stay up to date with developments in clinical practice, and connect with colleagues across the healthcare community.
Over the past year, our CME evenings have continued to grow, bringing together GPs and specialists to share knowledge, discuss emerging trends and explore practical approaches to patient care. More importantly, they have become a valuable forum for collaboration, helping strengthen relationships across the healthcare sector while supporting ongoing professional development.
Reflecting on the past year
Over the last 12 months, we have hosted a range of CME events covering topics including gastroenterology, endoscopy, liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease, breast health and more. Each session has been designed with a clear focus on providing practical, evidence-based insights that GPs can apply in their day-to-day practice.
One of the most rewarding aspects of the programme has been the level of engagement from attendees. Across our events, we’ve seen strong participation, thoughtful discussion, and a genuine appetite for learning and collaboration. Perhaps most encouraging has been the number of GPs who continue to return session after session. Many attendees have become familiar faces at our CME evenings, regularly joining us because they find the content relevant, engaging and directly applicable to the challenges they encounter in primary care. This ongoing support and attendance is one of the strongest indicators that the programme is delivering value to our local GP community.
What we’ve learnt
As our CME programme has evolved, we’ve gained valuable insights into what resonates most with GPs.
- Firstly, relevance is key. Sessions that focus on common presentations, referral pathways, treatment updates and practical clinical guidance consistently generate the highest levels of engagement.
- We’ve also learnt that GPs appreciate the opportunity to connect directly with specialists. While the educational content is important, the ability to ask questions, discuss real-world scenarios and build relationships with local specialists adds significant value to the experience.
- Finally, we’ve seen the importance of creating a welcoming and interactive environment. The most successful sessions are those that encourage conversation, knowledge sharing, and meaningful discussion between colleagues across primary and secondary care.
These learnings continue to guide our approach as we plan future events and ensure our CME programme remains relevant, practical, and beneficial for attendees.
Looking ahead
Our commitment to supporting the GP community remains as strong as ever.
Next week, we look forward to welcoming attendees to our upcoming CME evening, Advances in Urology: Modern BPH Treatments & UTI Management. The session will feature A/Prof Kamran Zargar discussing modern surgical treatment options for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), while Dr Morgan Pokorny will provide practical guidance on the diagnosis and management of urinary tract infections.
Beyond next week’s event, we are continuing to develop future CME opportunities that reflect the needs and interests of our GP community and are excited to be hosting our first-ever repeat CME session! Following overwhelming interest and positive feedback, Dr Anurag Sekra will return in August 2026 to re-present ARMA: Anti-Reflux Mucosal Ablation and its Place in the Management of GORD. Joining him will be Dr Stephen Gerred, presenting Shedding New Light on Difficult-to-See GI Lesions: Gastric Intestinal Metaplasia (GIM) and Serrated Polyps – making for what promises to be another practical, insightful, and clinically relevant evening.
By working closely with our specialists and listening to attendee feedback, we aim to deliver sessions that support ongoing learning while helping strengthen connections across the healthcare sector.
