Throughout July, the Ormiston team swapped the winter slowdown for a little friendly competition with our Beat the Freeze Move Challenge.
Designed to encourage our people to keep moving through the colder months, the challenge saw teams from across Ormiston track their steps throughout July, with every walk, workout and bit of everyday movement adding to their team total.
The aim of the game? To collectively walk the length of New Zealand in teams of 5 – around 1,600 km. But some of our teams didn’t just reach the finish line – they went waaay beyond it.

A little friendly competition
And there was certainly no shortage of movement! Across the month, 18 teams clocked an incredible 27,690,523 steps between them.
From lunchtime walks and weekend adventures to simply finding more opportunities to move during the day, Beat the Freeze was all about making movement part of everyday life. Of course, once the leaderboard came into play, things got a little competitive too…
Taking out the top spot was Gut Instinct, who covered an impressive 2,959 kilometres over the course of the challenge.
There were some huge individual efforts as well, with Jacey Sison topping the individual leaderboard after recording 694,689 steps – the equivalent of around 534.4 kilometres across July.

More than just the numbers
While the kilometres and step counts made for some great competition, Beat the Freeze was really about encouraging our people to get moving, connect with their teammates and do something positive for their wellbeing during winter.
It was great to see teams getting behind the challenge in their own way, encouraging each other, sharing updates and finding plenty of creative ways to add a few more steps to the daily total.
A huge thank you to everyone who took part and helped make Beat the Freeze such a success. Whether you were chasing the top of the leaderboard or simply moving a little more than usual, every step counted.
27.6 million steps later, we think it’s safe to say the Ormiston team well and truly beat the freeze – we’ll see you all next year for round two!
