Alessandra Canal grew up in Auckland and graduated from the University of Auckland Medical School before training in plastic surgery in New Zealand. Her postgraduate training took her overseas to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, UK, and to breast and hand fellowships in Paris, Belgium, Houston and Nashville – during which she became the first surgeon to perform the DIEP flap technique in New Zealand.
She went on to hold a consultant post at Addenbrooke’s University Teaching Hospital in Cambridge before returning to New Zealand in 2008. Alessandra is a consultant plastic surgeon at Middlemore Hospital and remains actively involved in research, teaching and publishing in her field.
Outside the operating theatre, Alessandra speaks Italian.
